‘Mortal Kombat’ Star Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa Passes Away at 75: Iconic Actor’s Life Celebrated

Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, a distinguished actor famed for his involvement in the Mortal Kombat series and The Man in the High Castle, has passed away at the age of 75.

Born in Tokyo, Tagawa succumbed to complications following a stroke on a Thursday morning in Santa Barbara, as reported by his family to Deadline. He was in the company of his children during his final moments.

While Tagawa was born in Tokyo, his childhood was spent across various parts of the U.S. South and also in Hawaii due to his father’s military commitments. He initially engaged in traditional Japanese karate during his time at the University of Southern California before relocating back to Japan to further his studies with the Japan Karate Association. His return to Hollywood marked the beginning of his successful acting career.

Tagawa’s Hollywood breakthrough came in 1987 when he portrayed Chang, the emperor’s chauffeur, in Bernardo Bertolucci’s critically acclaimed movie The Last Emperor. His career flourished as he featured in notable films such as License to Kill (1989), Pearl Harbor (2001), and Planet of the Apes (2001), and later as the Baron in the 2005 Academy Award-winning Memoirs of a Geisha.

His extensive filmography also includes roles in Rising Sun (1993), Snow Falling on Cedars (1999), Elektra (2005), and 47 Ronin (2013), where he often showcased his martial arts skills.

Tagawa is widely recognized for his portrayal of the malevolent sorcerer Shang Tsung in the Mortal Kombat series, appearing in multiple film, television, and video game adaptations over the years.

He first took on the role of Shang Tsung in the 1995 movie adaptation and returned for the sequel, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, in 1997. He continued to play this character in the 2013 TV series Mortal Kombat: Legacy and the 2015 series Mortal Kombat X: Generations. In 2019, he lent his voice to the same character in the video game Mortal Kombat 11, and in 2023, his likeness was featured in the RPG Mortal Kombat: Onslaught.

In addition to his work in Mortal Kombat, Tagawa appeared as Heihachi Mishima in the 1991 film adaptation of Tekken. He also contributed voice work to the video games Soldier Boyz, Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu, and World of Warcraft: Legion.
