Dressed in an elegant black lace gown, Jessica was accompanied by her sister Ashlee. The sisters were there to present at the awards, a role Jessica excitedly announced in an Instagram post earlier that month.
In her social media announcement on September 2, Jessica expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “Back to where it all began! I’m presenting at the 2025 #VMAs! Tune in Sunday at 8 pm ET on CBS and Paramount+!”
Her return to the VMA stage comes during a personal upheaval, as Jessica is currently going through a separation from her husband Eric Johnson, with whom she has three children and was married for a decade.
Jessica shared details about the separation publicly, mentioning, “Eric and I have been living separately, navigating a painful situation in our marriage. Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them.”
In an interview with PEOPLE, Jessica discussed how the split has deeply affected her, sharing that her heart was “completely broken.” She credits her music as a crucial support during these tough times, adding, “I had to continue to focus on the music. Thank God, I had Nashville.”
Regarding her emotional journey through the separation, Jessica reflected, “I have been through the darkest time, being held by the most light in an odd way. I’ve grown up so much. I can handle so much. It wasn’t easy.”
