Guy Fieri is unveiling a new Food Network series set in his famed Flavortown, a launch that follows the serious on-set injury he recently suffered.
The network revealed on Thursday that Flavortown Food Fight will debut on March 4.
Described by the network as the long-talked-about but previously unseen world of Flavortown, the series uses that imagined culinary landscape as the backdrop for a multi-round cooking competition.
For the first time, television audiences will be able to explore the streets and establishments of Flavortown alongside a roster of America’s skilled chefs. Contestants will put their talents on display across a range of eateries created just for the show—an array of distinctive restaurants that exist only within this themed universe.
Fieri, who has been developing the concept for years, said he’s excited to finally open Flavortown up to viewers everywhere.
Each episode pits three chefs against one another as they move through the different neighborhoods of Flavortown. Challenges will take place in settings that include street-food carts, neighborhood joints, fast-casual spots and upscale dining rooms, many of which carry names inspired by moments from Fieri’s life and career.
Competitors face multiple elimination rounds that test both their culinary knowledge and hands-on technique. The episode victor can win up to $200,000 and earns the opportunity to return the following week to defend their title against two new challengers.
In his role as Flavortown’s self-styled mayor, Fieri will reveal the theme for each installment alongside his son, Hunter, 29, who will join him for some of the challenges. Each week two guest judges will also sample the dishes and offer critiques.
It was while shooting Flavortown Food Fight that Fieri suffered a fall down a flight of stairs, resulting in a severe tear to his quadriceps muscle that required emergency surgery. He later described the accident as a misstep that caused his legs to extend in opposite directions and produced an unusually catastrophic mid-muscle rupture.
Medical staff operated quickly to repair the injury and prevent the muscle from retracting; doctors noted the tear was atypical because it occurred in the center of the quadriceps rather than at the tendon or tendon-bone attachment, which is the more common pattern.
Earlier this month Fieri told PEOPLE he’s on the mend and trying to slow down during recovery. His physicians have urged caution, and he acknowledged the experience has been one of the toughest he’s faced in recent years.
Flavortown Food Fight premieres Wednesday, March 4 at 9 p.m. ET on Food Network, with streaming availability the following day on HBO Max and discovery+.
