A young man has been found guilty of the murder of a “gifted” teenager who had a bright future ahead of him in Edinburgh.

Lewis McCartney, 18, succumbed to his injuries after being found critically hurt on Viewcraig Street in the early hours of a Sunday morning. He was quickly transported to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he passed away shortly after.

Bailey Dowling, aged 21, has been convicted of murdering the young teen at the High Court in Edinburgh. His sentencing will occur at a future date.

They continued, “He was exceptionally talented; he could make his mountain bike soar, had so much more to learn and offer. Our hearts go out to his grieving family. Rest in peace, young man.”

Kirsty Stembridge, a colleague of Lewis, commented, “It’s so heartbreaking. Lewis was a wonderful young man to work alongside at Bridge 8. He had so much skill and potential. My deepest sympathies go out to all his loved ones.”

Clients of Bridge 8 who had lessons from Lewis described him as a “patient, lovely young guy.”

Gayle Foulner shared, “It’s terrible news. Last year, I spent a wonderful evening on the canal with my cubs, and Lewis was fantastic with them. Sending love to his family and friends during this unimaginably tough time.”

Elspeth Lewis recounted, “I’m absolutely devastated by this sad news today. A few months ago, Lewis took my partner and me out paddle boarding in the pouring rain. He was incredibly patient with us, complete novices… such a lovely young guy. It’s hard to believe this has happened, and I’m so saddened for his family and friends. What a tragic loss.”

Detective Chief Inspector George Calder remarked, “My thoughts are with Lewis’ family and friends as they grapple with this tragedy. I hope this verdict can bring them some measure of justice.”

“Dowling now faces the repercussions of his actions, which led to the untimely death of Lewis, a young man with a promising future, cherished by a loving and caring family,” he added.

“Such violent crimes have no place in our communities. I urge those who choose to carry weapons to seriously consider the grave consequences of their actions,” Calder stated.

“I’d like to extend my gratitude to the public for their cooperation during our investigation,” he concluded.
