Two actresses nominated for Golden Globes will not be present at this year’s ceremony.
Cynthia Erivo, who received a best actress nomination for her portrayal of Elphaba in Wicked: For Good, and Carrie Coon, recognized in the supporting actress category for her work on HBO’s White Lotus, will both be absent from the awards despite their nods.
Their absence is due to live-theater obligations.
Erivo is currently deep into rehearsals and performances for a one-woman stage adaptation of Dracula in London’s West End, a piece in which she tackles 23 distinct roles in an unconventional reimagining of Bram Stoker’s tale. Coon, meanwhile, is appearing tonight on Broadway in the tense drama Bug, a play penned by her husband, Tracy Letts.
The 38-year-old Erivo told Wonderland Magazine that she’s terrified by the challenge. She admitted to being extremely frightened, while also confessing a simultaneous thrill about the risky, almost absurd nature of the project.
Coon took to X (formerly Twitter) to acknowledge her nomination and explain her absence. She wrote that she wouldn’t be able to cheer on friends or gush over fellow artists at the Golden Globes that evening, but expressed gratitude for the recognition and a belief that everyone nominated was simply glad to be included.
Known for standout roles on HBO series such as The Leftovers and The Gilded Age, Coon’s appearance in Bug marks a collaboration with Letts for the first time since they originally met in 2010 while working together on Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.
