Frontier’s Big Move: Free Checked Bags in Response to Southwest’s New Fee Policy!

By Ethan Wilson

Frontier is targeting Southwest’s clientele.

On March 11, Southwest Airlines declared the end of its free baggage policy, which quickly sparked widespread dissatisfaction. Many customers expressed that the sole reason they chose Southwest was for its two complimentary checked bags—a feature that set the airline apart until now.

This change is set to take effect on May 28.

Frontier’s Counteroffer

Frontier Airlines made its move on March 18, issuing a press statement that invited Southwest’s disgruntled patrons to “break up” with their current airline. Frontier is providing one free checked bag for tickets booked by March 24 for travel dates between May 28 and August 18, using the promo code FREEBAG. Additionally, the airline is offering a package deal for nonstop flights booked up to August 18 that includes a free carry-on and reserved seat at no extra cost.

“We’ve always been committed,” stated Barry Biffle, CEO of Frontier, in the press release. “While other airlines are moving away from what passengers appreciate, we are embracing it. Consider this the ultimate ‘break up with your old airline’ offer. If passengers reciprocate our commitment, we might make these benefits a permanent fixture.”

Securing Free Checked Bags on Southwest

Another upcoming change at Southwest involves a new fare category. Starting May 28, the airline will introduce the basic fare, which will be its least flexible and most affordable ticket option, as described by Bob Jordan, President, CEO, and Vice Chairman of the Board, in a customer email.

The cost to check bags under the new policy remains unclear, but options for free checked luggage still exist. Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and travelers with business select fares can continue to check two bags at no cost. Additionally, Southwest will extend one free checked bag to A-List Members and certain other customers.
