A tragic incident occurred at the private Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides school in Nantes, where the suspect was subdued by school staff until the arrival of law enforcement.
A fatal knife attack at a school in France has resulted in the death of one individual and serious injuries to at least three others. The tragic event unfolded at the Notre-Dame-de-Toutes-Aides private school in Nantes on Thursday.
According to police, the perpetrator, believed to be a fellow high school student, commenced the attack around noon local time. The Mirror reports that a school staff member quickly intervened, restraining the attacker until police took him into custody at the scene.
Europe1 reports that the attacker, following a dispute, ascended to the second floor where he stabbed a female student before descending to stab three more students on the first floor.
The deceased was identified as a second-year high school student, and emergency services quickly responded to the scene. Those critically injured are currently receiving medical attention, and a psychological support unit has been established within the school premises.
A police spokesperson revealed that the 15-year-old suspect is a student at the school and had no prior police record. He was found wearing all black, including a helmet and a balaclava. Local media discovered two knives near the scene along with his school items, with no indications of a terrorism-related motive.
Rue des Épinettes has been completely cordoned off, and at the scene, students were seen visibly distressed and comforting each other.
Concerned parents converged at the school, which had been secured by police officers as students were moved to a safe location around 1pm. A first-year student recounted to Ouest France, “We exited our classroom at 1pm and saw many students crying. We were initially unaware of the cause. The incident has left us deeply shocked.”
“Such incidents are usually seen on TV. We never imagined it happening at our school,” remarked a final-year student. “The reality of the situation is yet to sink in; it’s truly shocking,” added another.
A visibly shaken student also shared with a local reporter, “We had just gone for lunch in town and heard the news on the tram. It’s dreadful. We had exams this morning and more scheduled for today. It seemed just like any other day.”
