Children Rescued in Dunes: Group Lost at Scottish Beauty Spot

By Benjamin Harrison

An adult and two children were rescued with the help of RNLI, coastguard, and police from Gullane Bay after losing their way among dense gorse on Monday evening.

A significant rescue effort unfolded at Gullane Bay, East Lothian, where two children and an adult were led astray in the darkness of the scenic location on Monday, December 29. The operation saw the mobilization of RNLI lifeboat crews, coastguard teams, and police.

The emergency was reported at 4:51 pm when the group lost their bearings while navigating through the gorse-covered dunes on the bay’s eastern side. Responders from North Berwick and Kinghorn Lifeboat stations swiftly responded, coordinating with local Coastguard Rescue Teams for a prompt and efficient search.

Using searchlights and night vision gear, the North Berwick lifeboat crew, alongside an infrared-equipped Kinghorn team, illuminated the area, which was crucial for the coastguard teams to maneuver through the challenging terrain.

Despite the difficult conditions, the stranded trio was quickly located. They were carefully guided out of the dense gorse by the coastguard, ensuring their safe return. Following the successful rescue, the lifeboats returned to their respective stations.

During the festive season, RNLI lifeboats are frequently called into action. In 2024, there were 119 launches, including 28 by the North Berwick crew, who successfully saved seven lives. The RNLI has expressed gratitude on social media for the generous support that helps fund the vital equipment and training needed for such rescues. In 2024 alone, the charity spent over £190 million to maintain its lifesaving services.
