Edinburgh stabbing victims break silence: Irvine teen injured in separate incident

By Benjamin Harrison

A busy Saturday in Scotland’s courts and communities has brought fresh headlines: a violent attack in Edinburgh that left students injured, a suspected stabbing in Ayrshire, new developments around a high-profile criminal figure, and fallout from a major party funding scandal. These stories matter now because they touch public safety, criminal justice and political accountability across the country.

  • Edinburgh – Two international students wounded in an attack after evening prayers; a 36-year-old charged with multiple attempted murder counts with a terrorism aggravation.
  • Irvine – A 17-year-old rushed to hospital after an alleged brawl; two teenage boys arrested and charged.
  • Paul Ferris biopic – Casting talks underway as the former gangster meets the actor expected to portray him.
  • SNP finances – Calls for a wider inquiry after claims whistleblowers were sidelined; Peter Murrell jailed for embezzlement.
  • Fife – A man died after a tractor overturned; police say the death is being treated as explained and the Health and Safety Executive notified.

Edinburgh students wounded after leaving mosque

Two 22-year-old postgraduate students who had recently arrived from India were seriously injured in an attack in Sighthill Park shortly after leaving evening prayers on 19 June. Authorities have said the incident appears to have targeted them because of their religion; Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the violence as likely motivated by anti-Muslim hatred.

Police later charged 36-year-old Lewis Hawkes at Edinburgh Sheriff Court with five counts of attempted murder, each recorded with an aggravation linked to a suspected terrorist connection. Other men were also hurt in separate incidents on Telford Road and Leith Walk that night, police said.

The two students told reporters they now feel too afraid to leave their homes. Local communities and university officials are monitoring support needs as the criminal case proceeds.

Irvine teenager hospitalised after alleged stabbing

Emergency services were called to High Street in Irvine at about 8.40pm on Friday after reports of youths causing a disturbance. A 17-year-old male was found with serious injuries and taken to hospital.

Social media accounts suggested the teen had been stabbed; Police Scotland has not confirmed the exact cause of the injuries. Two boys, aged 15 and 16, were arrested and charged and will be reported to the appropriate authorities in due course.

Ex-gangster’s life to be dramatised — star meets subject

Production plans are advancing for a film about Paul Ferris, with Glasgow actor Paul Brannigan reportedly lined up to play the former criminal figure. The project, expected to be titled Ferris, follows on from the award-winning The Wee Man (2013), which depicted the same milieu and helped launch the profile of its lead actor at the time.

Brannigan, 38, and Ferris, 62, met at Molly Malone’s pub in Glasgow this week to discuss the film. The project is being developed by Glasgow-based Tartan Productions; producers have not yet announced a production timetable or release date.

Calls for wider probe into SNP finances after Murrell conviction

Professor James Mitchell, an academic who has written on the party’s history, warned that whistleblowers who questioned finances in 2020–21 were subjected to harassment and marginalisation. His remarks came after former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell was sentenced last week to five years and three months for embezzling more than £400,000 from the party over more than a decade.

Former finance committee members Cynthia Guthrie and Allison Graham have publicly alleged internal bullying and suggested senior figures misled party members; those claims add pressure for an independent inquiry into how concerns were handled.

Farmer dies after tractor overturn in Fife

Emergency crews responded to a tractor overturn near the A985 in Dunfermline at about 8pm on Friday, 26 June. A man was pronounced dead at the scene; his family have been informed.

Police said the death is currently being treated as explained and is not thought to be suspicious. The Health and Safety Executive has been notified and routine inquiries are under way.

What to watch next: the Edinburgh case will move through the sheriff court system and any additional charges or CCTV releases could shape local policing responses. The SNP situation may prompt calls for formal reviews of party financial oversight as Murrell serves his sentence.
