Actress credits sleeping apart from fiancé for major relationship turnaround

Kaley Cuoco and Tom Pelphrey have adopted an unusual sleeping setup that has completely changed life for the engaged pair.

The 40-year-old Big Bang Theory alum discussed the choice for separate sleeping spaces during a Monday appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, explaining that Pelphrey, 43, found it difficult to get rest thanks to their several dogs and their two-year-old daughter, Matilda.

“He reached a point where he said, ‘I can’t keep doing this,’ and I understood,” Cuoco said, describing how he began taking the guest room. She called the arrangement a real turning point for their household routine.

Plephrey is more of a night person, while Cuoco rises early, so their internal clocks simply don’t match, she noted, admitting she would often creep around in the morning to avoid waking her fiancé.

“He spends his evenings writing and reading — that’s his quiet time,” she said. “He’s up late and tends to sleep in when he doesn’t have to work. From the start, our bedtimes were different: I go to bed earlier and get up sooner. We are on totally opposite schedules.”

Pelphrey was the one who suggested they try sleeping apart, though Cuoco admitted she initially hesitated to agree.

“We do couples therapy and we love it, and he brought this up there,” she recalled. “At first I worried about what others would think. He pointed out that we barely see each other at night — it’s not like we’re sharing romantic moments or cuddling. He asked, ‘Why does it matter to you?’ I realized it didn’t, and agreed to give it a shot.”

These days Pelphrey sleeps in the guest room — though he hasn’t permanently left their shared bedroom — and both say they sleep much better without disturbing one another.

Cuoco, who became engaged to Pelphrey in August 2024 after roughly two years together, called the change one of the best decisions she’s made, saying, “It’s been fantastic for us. We’re so much happier.”
