The Becker Buzzards 35 and over baseball team traveled to Minnetonka Tuesday to take on the Saints - one of the top teams in the North Star Classic Baseball League (NSCBL).
They showed it by thumping the Buzzards easily,10-2.
A rough fourth inning in which the Buzzards gave up six runs was the turning point in the game. Brian Smith started on the mound for Becker and went 3-2/3 innings before being relieved by Matt Eigen, who finished off the game and pitched very well in relief despite having pitched a complete game Saturday.
On a sweltering night, the Buzzards’ bats were cooled off, as they managed just five hits, two by Deron Trovall and Mark Kolbinger,
one each by Matt Eigen and Mark Graham.
Buzzards 6, Mudcats 5
The Buzzards came from behind in dramatic form in their last at bat last Saturday to beat the Mayer Mudcats at home, 6-5.
The Buzzards extended their win streak to four games and improved their record to 5-6 in the North Star Classic Baseball League.
Becker took an early 1-0 lead when Graham singled in the bottom of the first inning and Trovall moved Graham to second with a sacrifice bunt. Jason Pfingsten singled to score Graham.
The Mudcats tied it up in the top of the second inning and looked to be running away with the game when they tallied three more runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
The Buzzards, however, came back in their own half of the third as Graham and Trovall lead off with a pair of singles. Pfingsten doubled to score Graham, only to have Trovall thrown out at home on a close play, trying to score all the way from first base. Matt Eigen lifted the team back up as he singled to score Pfingsten, narrowing the lead to 4-3.
The Mudcats weren’t done, as they battled back to score one run in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-3, but Becker countered by scoring one run in the sixth inning with a pair of doubles by Gary Gilbert and Dan Baird to get within one run of the Mudcats.
The exciting seventh inning began as Pfingsten singled with one out and moved to third base on a single by Gilbert. The next batter, Eigen, delivered a two out double to score the two baserunners to secure the come from behind win for the Buzzards.
Becker collected 14 hits in the win with Pfingsten going four-for-four with two doubles. Eigen went three-for-four with two doubles and pitched a complete game, helping himself and the Buzzards with the game winning hit. Graham, Gilbert and Baird each had two hits a piece.
The Buzzards’ next game is a home game Sun., Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. against the Loretto Sox.
