The Becker boys 14AA Baseball team advanced to the league championship by beating Osseo/Maple Grove in extra innings Thursday night.
Becker - who received a bye in the first round of the Section II tournament, reached the title game after Plymouth bowed out and forfeited the second-round game. Osseo/Maple Grove proved to be a challenging foe as they tried to pin Becker with their first loss of the season on their home field, but Becker prevailed 7-6 in eight innings.
Game Summary:
Osseo/Maple Grove got off to a good start, scoring one run in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth. Though Becker failed to score in the early innings, they shut down the OMG team the next two innings until the offense came alive in the sixth.
In the bottom of sixth, Brandon Johnson reached first on an error, which opened the door to four straight hits by Josh Nohner, Zack Zimmer, Brandon Croatt and Eric Tunglund to tie the score at four.
Both teams went scoreless in the seventh and the game got dim for Becker as Osseo/Maple Grove added two runs in the top of the eighth inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth and the game hanging in the balance, Tunglund reached on a base hit. Nick Valerious drew a walk and John Crowley got hit by a pitch to
load the bases. Andrew Eilers stepped in and drove a base hit to center to score two to even the score at six. With Crowley at second base and Eilers at first, Brandon Johnson ripped a game winning double down the third baseline to score Crowley from second.
The team is now 18-0 and plays an undetermined team Thursday at 6 p.m. at Northwestern College in St. Paul.
